Typographie (Emil Ruder, 1967)
Monday, November 2nd, 2009
Ruder’s 1967 book Typographie is an awesome source on the principles of typography and graphic design in general. The whole thing is time set in swiss design of the 50’s and 60’s and reeks of awesomeness.

Verlag Arthur Niggli AG 5th edition published in 1988. Other editions are squared but this one is rectangular, the only difference in the layout is a bigger space between the header and pictures. Previous editions are : 1967, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1988, 1995, 2002 (others edition avaible throug Hasting House, USA)

1Bottlerocket send us some pictures of the first edition, 1967. While technically this is the only book published by Ruder, he includes a lot of previously published material from TM articles and student studies. The first edition is printed using lead plates with offset printing methods. The images have a softer feel and the color is more organic looking.

As always, with designers-books you can inquire on current rates for in/out of print & rare books
The easiest way to find this book is to order the lastest edition via Arthur Niggli Verlag site. It’s quite expensive but some older editions are avaible for less than 60 euros, specially for the first paperback edition published in the US by Hasting House. 8 copies of the first edition is avaible with a very wuick search, for 55 $ to 163 €.

“Winnipeg is not a city, it is a form of irony” – Matthew Rankin, L’Aterlier National du Manitoba
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
This is The Tragedy of the Winnipeg Jets (2006) via ubu web:
Using degraded scraps of de-accessioned Winnipeg television found in BFI bins and rubbish heaps, the filmmakers of the Atelier National du Manitoba have pieced together a surreal and ridiculous alternative history of the Winnipeg Jets. Combining depraved lo-fi video depictions of on-ice Jet humiliation with found footage of Quebec politics, Billy Van, Wayne Gretzky and porn, this experimental collage creates a provocative and satiric portrait of Winnipeg identity. Banned in its native Manitoba, “Death by Popcorn” has nonetheless become a cult hit throughout the art-house hockey circuit.
The Atelier National du Manitoba contends that the ironic epic of the Winnipeg Jets seems to mirror the mysterious trajectory of Winnipeg history itself. Both tell a story about people whose triumph was short-lived, whose defeat was monumental, whose drama was played out upon a cruel bed of ice, and who, at the end of their lives, moved to far away Phoenix Arizona.
L’Atelier national du Manitoba is a filmmaking and art collective based in Winnipeg, Canada. Founded in February 2005, the club’s artistic output often focuses on the history, culture and ephemera of Winnipeg and Manitoba, in general. In collaboration, and individually under the l’Atelier rubric, the group’s members have created an array of short and feature-length films, videos, posters, art projects, curatorial showcases and essays.

Peter Hujar, Candy Darling on her Deathbed, 1974
wiki:
Candy Darling (c. November 24, 1944 – March 21, 1974) was a transsexual Warhol superstar who starred in Andy Warhol’s films Flesh (1968) and Women in Revolt (1971).
This was used as the cover art for the Antony and the Johnsons record I Am a Bird Now
via antonyandthejohnsons.com:
Hi, here are some things I am thinking about:
circles of light, the Arctic, witches, mammals, Samoa,
the slavery of addiction and viral late stage capitalism, woman power,
families treasuring their transgendered children,
the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change,
feral intuition and a global new two-spirit alliance,
forests, oxygen, carbon,
patriarchal religions and heirarchies that would rather catalyze apocalypse than admit
that centuries of male domination have almost destroyed us,
a feminist revolution might save our world

Earthrise: The Photo that Launched a Movement
Saturday, December 27th, 2008
@ treehugger.com

It has been said that the pictures taken on Christmas Eve forty years ago created the environmental movement, that for the first time people really could see that we really were all together on one little boat floating in space. This was the first, the black and white shot. Historian Christopher Riley writes in the BBC that Frank Borman saw it: “Oh, my God! Look at that picture over there!” Then they ran for the colour film.

Soon it was on the cover of the first Whole Earth Catalogue, an icon of the movement. Nobody had yet even considered that it might be a vast photoshop job- it was a time when we believed our eyes.
