Bug Dome
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

This amazing structure presents architectural contrast at its strongest and reinforces the age old idea that in design, concept is truely king. Built by Hsieh Ying-chun (謝英俊),
Marco Casagrande (馬可·卡薩格蘭), and Roan Ching-yueh (阮慶岳) in Shenzhen, China, Bug Dome is best explained here:
The building is realized on a wasteland of a ruined building site in-between the Shenzhen City Hall and an illegal workers camp. The design is inspired by insects. The bamboo construction methods are based on local knowledge from rural Guanxi brought into the city by the migrating construction workers.

This was constructed for the Shenzen-Hong Kong Biennial and after it is over the Bug Dome will act as an un-official social club for illegal workers from the Chinese countryside.
Thanks to Marco of Casagrande Laboratory for the heads up.
Check out the Bug Dome blog for more photos and detail on process.
